Superior Gem 1848-O Liberty Seated H10C

1848-O Liberty Seated Half Dime. MS-66+ (PCGS). CAC.
A beautiful Gem with subtle prooflike reflectivity in the fields throughout. Swaths of tangerine and bronze toning shift to richer shades of sapphire and crimson near the borders. Richly frosted across the devices and showing superior definition for the issue. Magnification fails to reveal any marks of note, leaving the eye appeal fully captivating beneath a light source.
While 600,000 1848-O half dimes were struck, the issue was subject to heavy attrition from circulation and melting, leaving only about 300-400 remaining for collectors today. The 1848-O is perhaps one of the most underexplored issues addressed by Valentine's original 1931 manuscript, which included only two varieties of this date, which was unrealistic for the size of this mintage. Fortunately, these two marriages were expanded to six in Breen's 1958 supplement to the Valentine reprint and swelled by two more pairings courtesy of William Harmon's research published in the March 1993 Gobrecht Journal (Issue# 56). The present example is among the finest survivors known with only 8 coins ranked higher at PCGS through MS-68. Remarkably, only 3 rank higher at CAC across all services, emphasizing the difficulty in finding true quality even at the highest levels.

PCGS# 4340. NGC ID: 233C.
